DRIVE HALLOWEEN SAFE
Halloween is sneaking up on us. Have you noticed Halloween isn't just for kids anymore but is also a major adults night out. Whether driving to a party or to your friend's place for an all night scary movie marathon, it's critical to share the road and our neighbourhoods with those little trick or treaters.
If you are behind the wheel this Hallows' Eve, remember Martin Law's Top 5 Tips:
- Take It Slow. Just slow it down. Plan to leave a few minutes early and take the time to drive in safety through that traffic and van loads of kids bound for the suburbs;
- Get Ready to Stop. Kids are excited and may not be paying attention to cars as they rush from door to door. A child might run out in front of your car. Be the adult driver you want your kids to meet on busy streets. As the adult driver of a vehicle, you always have that last clear chance to avoid a tragedy;
- Stay Out of the Suburbs. Avoid packed suburbs and especially new built housing developments. Tract housing is a magnet for van loads of rural kids who can hit hundreds of doors quickly and efficiently. The peak witching hours of 6pm-9pm are jammed with children rushing from house to house and darting across busy streets. If you don't have to be there, don't be there;
- Put Your Phone Down. No night is a good night to drive distracted. And on busy Halloween night, the danger is critical; and
- Drive Sober. Booze and fun cocktails may be part of your adult Halloween party plan. If so, your plan needs a designated driver or cab.
It takes a community to make Halloween safe for kids and adults alike.
Be part of your community and do your part.
Before you get behind that wheel, remember the choices you make will save lives.
Take a few minutes to plan ahead so every family can have a safe and Happy Halloween.
